Skyrim Gets a Blacksmith Companion Who Wants Proof of Your Craft, Not Your Coin

Gold can buy a lot in Skyrim. Weapons, armor, a room for the night, and the services of more than a few mercenaries. But walk up to Dawnstar's forge and offer Oskar a purse of septims, and you won't get very far. This Nord blacksmith wants to see what you can make.
That's the introduction to Oskar, a new follower from SethSaidThat whose recruitment quest, Prove Your Steel, asks players to present a steel-or-better weapon tempered to at least Exquisite quality. Oskar judges the metal and workmanship before agreeing to join you. It's a fitting first impression for a companion whose personality revolves around the forge, and a more memorable way to earn someone's loyalty than simply paying a hiring fee.
Once recruited, Oskar brings his trade on the road. Ask him to work on your equipment and he'll temper eligible pieces one quality tier higher, up to Legendary, for 50 gold per tier per item. Leave him in Dawnstar instead and he'll keep working at the forge, producing ingots, earning gold from his craft, and occasionally recovering rare ore. He isn't just a fighter with a blacksmith's backstory. His work is part of what he contributes to the adventure.
He's got plenty to say about it, too. The creator advertises more than 3,400 voiced lines covering places, weather, factions, quests, combat, and the things you get up to while traveling. Oskar can discuss his history, react to your choices, and grow closer to you over time, with friendship and romance among the possible paths. His voice is AI-generated using Boson AI's Higgs Audio, a detail worth knowing for players who have preferences about synthetic performances.
The follower system is independent of Skyrim's normal companion slot, so Oskar can travel alongside another follower rather than replacing them. He also has his own horse, equipment, and combat orders. Players using SethSaidThat's Estates of Skyrim can hire him as a specialist, while Warband integration offers another role for him; the dedicated Warband blacksmith post is planned for a future Warband release, not part of the current feature set.
What gives Oskar his identity is the way those pieces fit together. You meet him through smithing, benefit from his craft while traveling, and can leave him to keep working when the road takes you elsewhere. Skyrim has no shortage of followers willing to draw a sword. Finding one who cares whether yours was made properly is a nice change of pace.
