Fallout 4 gets a classic-style turn-based overhaul

Vurt's Classic Mode brings an unusually different way to play Fallout 4: a high, angled camera, mouse-driven exploration and fights that pause for each combatant's turn. Released on October 4, the overhaul makes movement and attacks compete for Action Points, turning a familiar stretch of the Commonwealth into a tactical encounter. You can switch back to the normal view, and indoor combat uses the game's own camera.
An update adds step-by-step movement and outlines for characters obscured by buildings. It's still an early release: enemies can occasionally act out of turn, newly arriving enemies briefly move freely, and cover can block a shot even after a successful hit roll. Gamepads are unsupported, and camera, VATS, or combat-AI mods may conflict.
UPDATE | OCTOBER 13, 2026
Classic Mode has advanced to version 0.9, adding clearer silhouettes for characters obscured by scenery in its isometric view. The developer still specifies Fallout 4 version 1.11.240 for that rendering feature and documents DirectX 11 configuration requirements and compatibility limits. This remains an evolving tactical overhaul rather than a finished, universally compatible conversion.
