Between the radiation, mutated wildlife, and people who consider a minigun an acceptable conversation starter, the Commonwealth isn't exactly a wonderful place for your peace of mind. Mikey4300's Sanity System takes that idea rather literally by introducing a new character stat that changes according to what you consume and the actions you take. As sanity drops, unsettling sounds begin creeping into the experience, followed by visual distortions and eventually enemies that aren't actually there. Those phantom attackers can't hurt you, but that doesn't mean seeing something charge out of the fog is going to make your afternoon any more relaxing.

The system also changes how your character performs. Low sanity can harm accuracy, intelligence, charisma, and trading prices, while providing advantages to certain stealth, melee, and movement abilities. Chems, alcohol, food, and violence can all push the meter in different directions, turning mental stability into another resource worth thinking about. Rather than simply adding more monsters to Fallout 4, Mikey4300 is experimenting with a different kind of danger: not always being able to trust what the wasteland is showing you.
