An owl living near your Minecraft home sounds pleasant enough. An owl that also helps keep Phantoms away? Now we're talking.

Creature Corner has expanded its wildlife with great horned and barn owls that can settle into hollow logs and suppress Phantom spawning within 32 blocks at night. The birds also come with their own distinctive sounds, including recorded great horned owl calls, duetting pairs, and the rather less soothing screeches and hisses of barn owls.

They're not the only newcomers. Giant toads now inhabit hot springs and taigas, eating various mobs while leaving tamed pets alone. They can also drop a sack that lets players launch themselves into the air and come crashing down in a damaging belly flop. It's not exactly graceful transportation, but Minecraft has never been short on unconventional ways to get around.

Nether characaras round out the additions, attacking vulnerable players and providing feathers used to craft blazing bolts.

We like the mixture here. Some creatures make the world feel more alive, others provide useful benefits, and a few give you another reason to watch your surroundings. The owls alone might be enough to convince players to make room for a hollow log near their next build.
