NVIDIA RTX Remix 1.6 Is Here, and Minecraft Is Getting the Path-Tracing Treatment

Minecraft has never needed cutting-edge graphics to look good. Its blocky landscapes are practically part of gaming history at this point. But give those familiar worlds realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows, and suddenly even a little dirt house can start looking like somewhere you'd want to spend an afternoon admiring the scenery.

NVIDIA has officially released RTX Remix 1.6, alongside a public beta bringing real-time path tracing to Minecraft: Java Edition. The Minecraft project targets Java 1.21.1 through Fabric, giving players an early opportunity to explore what the game looks like with a much more sophisticated lighting system. NVIDIA's testing has focused on a showcase world built by BlockWorks, so this is still an experimental release rather than a promise that every Minecraft world and mod combination will work perfectly.

The broader RTX Remix update has plenty going on beyond Minecraft, too. There's new DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering technology, expanded artistic controls, Windows on ARM support, and integration with ComfyUI workflows. Supported hardware also gains additional frame-generation options. For creators already experimenting with RTX Remix, that means more control over how their projects look and additional tools for building them.

We previously covered NVIDIA's plans for this release, but now the software and Minecraft beta are actually available. And while the technology is impressive, we're just as curious to see what Minecraft's builders do with it. Give somebody a world made entirely of blocks and enough freedom to experiment with lighting, and you can bet they won't stop at making the torches look prettier.
