Players still running Fallout 4's original PC build now have access to Native Equipment Condition, a mod that makes maintaining weapons and armor part of surviving the Commonwealth.

Created by hexef, the project introduces equipment degradation that affects an item's effectiveness and value as its condition deteriorates. Weapons and armor need occasional repairs, either using components at workbenches or paying traders to handle the job. It adds another consideration when deciding whether to keep using that favorite piece of gear or finally give it some attention.

The system itself isn't brand new, but the latest update is significant because it extends support to Fallout 4's original PC version. Previously, the mod's supported builds didn't include that release. The update also adjusts how certain apparel items wear down, adds more control over equipment exclusions, and improves condition information in the Pip-Boy.

Compatibility is worth checking carefully. Native Equipment Condition currently supports the original PC and Anniversary Edition builds, but not Fallout 4's Next Gen version.

There's also an important precaution if you decide to remove it later: repair any broken equipment before uninstalling. According to the creator, gear left at zero condition can remain unusable afterward.

For players who enjoy Fallout's survival mechanics and resource management, having equipment condition matter again adds another reason to think carefully about what they carry into the wasteland.
