Fallout 4 has never been particularly gentle on your hardware, especially when you're wandering through the Commonwealth's more crowded areas. Diamond City and Lexington can put a decent PC through its paces, and the game's outdoor shadows have long been one of the settings players turn down when they're trying to squeeze out a few more frames.

Modder Asciim0v is taking a different approach with Faster Shadows, an F4SE plugin that changes how Fallout 4 processes sunlight and shadows outdoors. Rather than constantly updating every shadow at the same rate, the plugin refreshes nearby shadows every frame while updating more distant ones less frequently. It also moves some of the processing work to a separate thread, with provisions to refresh shadows immediately when movement or lighting changes demand it.

The creator's performance figures are certainly worth a look. In tests conducted on the original PC version of Fallout 4, Asciim0v reports improvements of 12–20% in Diamond City and 39–42% in Lexington under specific conditions. Those are the developer's own benchmarks, not independently verified results, and actual improvements will depend on your system and settings.

What appeals to us here is the approach. Instead of simply asking players to sacrifice shadow quality for better performance, Faster Shadows tries to reduce how much unnecessary work the game performs in the first place. Whether those reported gains hold up across different PCs remains to be seen, but anyone who's watched Fallout 4 struggle through downtown Boston knows why a mod like this deserves attention.
