Fallout 4's Modern Compass Overhaul Makes Finding Your Way Around the Commonwealth a Whole Lot Easier

Fallout 4's compass does a decent job of pointing you toward your next objective, but it isn't particularly generous with information. You can see a marker somewhere ahead, sure, but figuring out exactly what you're approaching often means opening the Pip-Boy or wandering closer to find out. And when that marker turns out to be something unpleasant, you might wish you'd known a little sooner.
Modern Compass Overhaul, created by Frysix, gives that familiar strip of the HUD a welcome upgrade without replacing the whole interface. Quest markers can display objective labels and distances, enemies can show their names and levels, and optional markers help keep track of companions and other NPCs. Elevation arrows also make it easier to tell whether something is above or below you, which should come in handy when Boston's buildings start turning navigation into a guessing game.
There's some welcome restraint here, too. Unexplored locations can still keep their names hidden, so you don't have to sacrifice the satisfaction of discovering somewhere new just to get a more informative compass. The mod also offers customization for players who want to fine-tune what appears on-screen.
Compatibility is worth checking before installing. The current release supports Fallout 4's original PC version and Anniversary build, but the Next Gen 1.10.984 version isn't supported. The creator is also still working through a few display quirks, including icon clipping.
Personally, we like the idea of knowing a little more about what's lurking ahead without having to keep pulling up the Pip-Boy. The Commonwealth is dangerous enough without making us play twenty questions with a compass marker.
