Nearly twenty-eight years after Half-Life first dropped us into Black Mesa, people are still finding ways to tell completely different stories with Valve's old engine. Not every project needs another headcrab infestation or a scientist running for his life, either. Sometimes you get something like The Last Goodbye, a story-driven adventure with a distinctly film-noir flavor that feels a long way from Gordon Freeman's usual problems.

Created by TinPlateMan and the Guild of Inventors, The Last Goodbye follows Lucille through a world of mystery, danger, and some pretty unusual places for a Half-Life mod. Its newly released second act, Phantom Underworld, continues her story with Chapters III and IV, taking players further into an adventure that's been growing well beyond its original scope.

One of the more interesting locations is Sherwood Vale, an area inspired by actual streets in Vienna. We love seeing modders draw from real places when building their worlds, especially when they're working with an engine most of us associate with industrial corridors, alien laboratories, and the occasional crowbar-related emergency. Act II also brings improvements to the earlier chapters and three bonus levels, so returning players have more than just the next part of Lucille's story to explore.

There's still another act to come, with Crimson Vengeance currently in development. So while Phantom Underworld is playable now, Lucille's full adventure isn't finished just yet.

And that's part of what makes projects like this interesting to follow. Half-Life's engine was built for a very different kind of adventure, yet here we are, decades later, watching somebody use it to tell a moody, character-driven story of their own. That's a pretty remarkable second life for a game from 1998.
