After all these years, modders are still finding new ways to make the original Half-Life engine do things that would probably have seemed downright unreasonable back in 1998.

JPE's Half-Life: Retrograde is a work-in-progress campaign that puts players in the boots of a maintenance worker trying to restore power for the Lambda team during the Black Mesa disaster. The latest development update shows off a driveable vehicle system, complete with controlled camera movement, adjustable speeds, collision interactions, and engine sounds that respond to how fast you're moving. There's also work happening on more elaborate environmental destruction, including a collapsing industrial area inspired by Opposing Force. Some of what we're seeing is still rough development blockout, and the creator hasn't announced a release date. But seeing a GoldSrc project experiment with vehicles and more interactive environments is exactly the kind of wonderfully stubborn Half-Life modding that makes this community so much fun to follow.
