There are plenty of reasons to leave the Zone in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Mutants, anomalies, and the general likelihood of dying somewhere unpleasant usually top the list. But modder YALOKGAR1 has come up with a considerably more dramatic exit strategy. Zone to the MOON lets players set up an N-1 rocket, climb aboard, and launch themselves all the way to a playable stretch of the lunar surface. And yes, there's a way back.

This isn't just a rocket-shaped shortcut to a new map. Players place a launch pad in the open world, board the rocket, and watch a staged ascent before arriving at the Moon in an LK lander. The destination is a two-by-two-kilometer landscape of craters and rocks, with low gravity that sends the player leaping much higher than usual. There's an oxygen supply to manage, too: it drains as you walk, refills at the lander, and can hurt you if you let it run out. The Moon has no people or mutants, but it isn't entirely empty.

There's an abandoned outpost called Selena to investigate, a drivable Lunokhod rover, and three lunar artifacts to seek out. It's a strange change of scenery for a game built around scavenging through a dangerous, contaminated landscape. The artifacts give the trip a connection to the familiar S.T.A.L.K.E.R. pursuit of valuable oddities, while the rover and abandoned base offer reasons to venture beyond the lander. When you're finished exploring, you can lift off again, survive a fiery re-entry, and descend by parachute near the launch pad you left behind. The whole excursion has a beginning, a destination, and an actual return journey.

There are some important boundaries to the adventure. Zone to the MOON is designed for the Steam version of the game, runs in single-player open-world play, and requires ReShade 6.8 or newer with full add-on support under DirectX 12. The creator says it was made and tested on game build 2.1; on an unrecognized build, its game features stay disabled. Lunar low gravity applies to the player, not to thrown bolts or grenades.

One warning deserves particular attention if you plan to experiment: don't save on the Moon if you intend to remove the mod later. Without the add-on, that save can leave your character stranded high above an empty location. The creator also advises selling or dropping lunar artifacts before uninstalling, since they may disappear without the mod's files, although that outcome hasn't been tested. It's a substantial trip to take in a game where getting home alive is already an achievement. At least this time, home is an entire planet away.
