Less Jumping, More Grappling: Valheim's Grappling Hook Gets Some Welcome Tweaks

You'd think the hardest part of using a grappling hook would be getting it attached to something. But in Valheim, successfully hooking your target doesn't always mean you're going anywhere just yet. With its special attack, the hook can leave you attached and waiting for two jump presses before the pull begins. Modder orax is simplifying that interaction with GrapplingHookTweaks.

The mod introduces a dedicated reel-in command, assigned to Left Alt by default, that lets players initiate the pull whenever they're ready. It also allows reeling directly from the ground, eliminating the need to jump before the hook starts hauling you forward. Together, these changes make it easier to separate attaching the hook from actually moving, giving players more direct control over when that movement begins.

There's also an option for players who'd rather skip the extra input altogether. Launching the hook with its special attack can automatically initiate the pull, turning what was previously a two-step interaction into one continuous motion. It's a different approach from manually choosing when to reel in, and both have their appeal. Sometimes you want to attach yourself to something before deciding when to move. Other times, you've already made that decision and would prefer the hook to get on with it.

The new control scheme replaces the original jump-to-pull behavior by default, but players can restore it, disable automatic reeling, or adjust ground-based pulling through the mod settings. That flexibility makes the mod useful for different preferences without requiring everyone to adopt the same control scheme. Its documented changes focus on the hook's control and pulling behavior.

The release runs client-side and requires BepInExPack for manual installation. Support across game versions and compatibility with other grappling-hook modifications have not been verified.

It's a small quality-of-life improvement, but one with a clear purpose. Whether you prefer to control the pull yourself or have it begin automatically, GrapplingHookTweaks removes some of the unnecessary fuss between attaching the hook and actually getting somewhere. Your Viking still has to find something worth grappling onto. At least getting pulled toward it doesn't have to involve another round of jumping.
