There's something particularly frustrating about revisiting an old multiplayer game and realizing the servers, services, and online systems that once brought everybody together have long since disappeared.

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring is one of those games, and auibiloa's Reconnected project has been working to bring its multiplayer functionality back to life.

Using OpenSpy and a relay system, the mod restores online connections without relying on the original GameSpy infrastructure. Its latest update makes the whole process easier to manage, with automatic relay-server discovery, a connection-status indicator, remembered usernames, and anonymous login enabled by default. That last bit is particularly welcome for anyone who just wants to play without digging up account credentials from the early 2000s.

The creator also designed the relay configuration so servers can be changed without requiring players to download another patch every time the endpoint moves. It's still a beta, and actual online availability depends on the supporting services remaining operational, but the work being done here is genuinely valuable.

Because once an old game's official multiplayer disappears, it's often the community that decides whether that part of its history gets to survive. And for a strategy game built around the battles of Middle-earth, having other human commanders to fight again is a pretty wonderful thing.
