Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour is still one hell of a strategy game. There's a particular satisfaction in building up your base, watching an army of Overlord tanks roll across the battlefield, and reducing somebody else's carefully planned defenses to rubble. Unfortunately, getting a game from 2003 to behave nicely on modern hardware can be a battle of its own.
Zero Hour Reimagined, from modder dement123, is tackling that problem with a new 64-bit executable and Vulkan renderer, alongside improved shadows, dynamic lighting, and water effects. It's more than a visual upgrade, though. The project also revisits the game's Hard AI, with changes to its economy, pathfinding, and battlefield decisions. So while your old favorite is getting a technical overhaul, the computer opponent is getting some attention, too.
Optional AI-upscaled HD textures round out the visual improvements, while the underlying work builds on the GeneralsGameCode source released by EA and TheSuperHackers. The creator has also made the project's source available, giving technically minded fans a chance to see what's happening under the hood.
You'll still need a copy of Zero Hour, and the Vulkan renderer requires compatible graphics hardware. The creator reports improvements to performance and larger battles, although those results haven't been independently tested by MNC.
For a game that's spent more than two decades inspiring mods, skirmishes, and the occasional spectacularly unfair AI encounter, seeing its underlying technology receive this kind of attention is welcome news. The tanks haven't gotten any younger, but at least the engine powering them is catching up.
