Mega-City One isn't exactly somewhere you'd want to spend your next vacation. Crime is everywhere, the streets are crawling with people who'd happily put a bullet in you, and the Judges have enough authority to arrest you, sentence you, and carry out the punishment before you've even figured out what you did wrong. Welcome to the wonderful world of Judge Dredd.
Now imagine exploring that dystopian nightmare through Quake II.
Apple Trees, a custom campaign from Oleksiy Trubachov, also known as SgtPappas, takes Quake II Remastered into the world of Judge Dredd, putting players in the boots of Judge Knoxx. Your assignment involves investigating illegal cybernetic augmentation and human experimentation inside the Apple Trees tower complex in Mega-City One. And given the kind of people who tend to be involved in those activities, we're guessing this isn't going to be a particularly friendly investigation.
It's an interesting pairing. Quake II's gritty industrial environments, heavy weapons, and relentless combat seem right at home in the grimy, oppressive world of Judge Dredd. Rather than simply giving the game a few recognizable weapons or character skins, Apple Trees is building an original campaign around that setting, complete with its own story and locations.
The project is currently available in Early Access, with two of its five planned levels playable. The creator acknowledges unfinished cutscenes, bugs, and other work still ahead, so don't expect a complete adventure just yet.
But we like where this is headed. Judge Dredd's world has always seemed like fertile ground for a brutal first-person shooter, and Quake II has certainly never been shy about letting players settle their problems with overwhelming firepower. Mega-City One might finally have found another Judge willing to clean house.
