A few ancient leopard remains from an Indonesian cave might not sound like the obvious starting point for a Planet Zoo exhibit. But they have inspired GreatCakeMods to imagine a prehistoric big cat, and someone will have to build it a nice enclosure first.
Modder GreatCakeMods has introduced Seropan Leopard - New Extinct Species, a creator-made reconstruction inspired by prehistoric leopard remains, bringing the feline into the game with an original model, hand-painted textures, and its own custom Zoopedia entry. The creator has also adjusted its behavior and habitat preferences, giving players something more distinctive to work with than a simple reskin of an existing leopard.
The history behind this one is worth a closer look. The mod draws on research into Early Holocene animal remains discovered at Seropan Cave in Indonesia's Gunung Sewu region. The study tentatively identifies some remains as leopard, but does not establish a separately named Seropan Leopard species. It's a fascinating addition to a game where much of the enjoyment comes from learning about the animals you're caring for. Here, that curiosity extends to a creator's interpretation of prehistoric wildlife, opening the door to exhibits inspired by a very different chapter of natural history.
And while the mod takes inspiration from the distant past, caring for its leopard should feel relatively familiar. GreatCakeMods uses Planet Zoo's African Leopard as the gameplay foundation, including its enrichment items, while modifying the animal's habitat preferences. Players can work with established big-cat care systems without sacrificing the appeal of designing something unique for a prehistoric reconstruction. The mod requires ACSE.
There's plenty of creative potential in that combination. A habitat inspired by prehistoric Indonesia could become the centerpiece of a prehistoric-wildlife collection, perhaps surrounded by exhibits exploring animals from different eras and environments. The custom Zoopedia gives builders a historical starting point, but how they bring that history to life is entirely up to them.
GreatCakeMods has explored this territory before, creating other extinct species for Planet Zoo, including the European Cave Leopard and Andrewsarchus. The Seropan Leopard continues that interest in giving animals from the fossil record a place among the game's living wildlife, one carefully recreated species at a time.
And really, that's part of what makes Planet Zoo such a wonderful playground for projects like this. You're not just adding another animal to the collection. You're getting the chance to build a home for a creator's vision of a leopard from Indonesia's prehistoric past.
