Here's the thing about Left 4 Dead 2: almost everything scary in it happens in bad light. Flashlight beams in a flooded basement, muzzle flashes popping off in a cornfield, headlights cutting through pounding rain. So if you were going to rebuild one layer of the game from scratch, lighting would be the logical choice, and that's exactly what NoMercyStudios are working on with Left 4 Dead RTX.

NVIDIA put the project in its GeForce news on October 21st, and the scope is bigger than a filter. The creators describe a full visual rebuild: ray tracing across the whole game, hand crafted physically based textures, high poly model replacements, and lighting redone throughout, presented in 4K. Their official media page lines the new screenshots up against the original lighting in the same scenes, so you can judge the difference for yourself.

Worth knowing before anyone goes looking for a download: there isn't one. This is a showcase for a project still in development, published by NightSightProductions, with a Steam wishlist page marked coming soon and no release date attached. The team is recruiting developers to help finish it, and playtests and a demo are described as under consideration, which is mod-speak for maybe, eventually.
