MOD SPOTLIGHT
Mass Effect 3's Expanded Galaxy Mod gives the Normandy a whole lot more life

The Normandy has always felt like more than just a spaceship.
It's where we catch up with our squadmates between missions, wander around checking on people we've grown attached to, make preparations for the next impossible assignment, and occasionally spend an embarrassing amount of time deciding what Shepard should wear.
For a lot of us, walking back aboard that ship feels a little like coming home.
And that's a big part of what makes Expanded Galaxy Mod so appealing.
Created by Kinkojiro and the Expanded Galaxy Mod team, this Legendary Edition version of the long-running Mass Effect 3 project expands several parts of Shepard's final adventure, from the Normandy and its crew to the wider galactic war against the Reapers. Rather than replacing the campaign with an entirely different story, it builds additional systems and interactions around the experience players already know.
The Normandy additions are particularly interesting. An optional module lets you customize parts of the ship, manage crew assignments, use an expanded firing range, interact with new cabin features, and encounter restored conversations. There are also ship upgrades, vehicle-related options, and radio features to help make the Normandy feel like an evolving headquarters rather than just the place you return to between firefights.
And because Mass Effect has always been about the people you meet along the way, the mod also pays attention to the crew itself.
An optional Visitors module can bring familiar characters back for additional appearances and conversations, depending on the choices you've made throughout the trilogy. Other additions provide more casual squadmate options and opportunities for eligible surviving characters from earlier games to join certain N7 missions.

The important word there is eligible. This isn't a magical resurrection button for everybody you've ever lost along the way. Character survival, loyalty, and story conditions still matter.
Beyond the ship, the Galactic War module revisits the broader conflict with expanded galaxy-map systems, revised war assets, and optional search-and-rescue assignments. The core package also offers useful additions such as mission-launch armor selection, more control over mission timing, and some extra weapon and equipment conveniences.
One of the nicest things about the whole project is its modular structure. You can choose which parts interest you instead of treating every feature as an inseparable package.
There are some important considerations before diving in, though. This version is specifically for Mass Effect 3 within Legendary Edition and uses ME3Tweaks Mod Manager. Certain modules have additional requirements, and the Galactic War changes are best experienced from a new playthrough because existing war-asset values can't necessarily be corrected after the fact. The creator also cautions that the ported war-asset system hasn't been fully tested or rebalanced through an entire Legendary Edition playthrough.
Compatibility matters as well, particularly with other modifications affecting the Normandy or galaxy map.
Still, there's something pretty special about a project that understands how much Mass Effect's smaller moments meant alongside its enormous battles. The galaxy might be falling apart, the Reapers might be closing in, and Shepard might have the weight of every civilization resting on their shoulders.
But there's always something comforting about walking through the Normandy and seeing a familiar face.
Expanded Galaxy Mod gives us a few more reasons to make that walk.
