Stronghold 2 gets changing seasons, working fishing huts, and a whole lot more life in its medieval world

Building a medieval castle is one thing. Keeping everybody fed, healthy, and reasonably happy while the weather turns against you? Well, that's a different story entirely.
Surmavanick's Four Seasons project, also known as the Stronghold 2.5 Update Mod, adds a changing seasonal calendar to Stronghold 2, complete with shifting weather, snow accumulation, spring thaws, autumn foliage, and winter trees. And this isn't just a case of making the landscape look prettier. The seasons actually affect how your settlement functions.
Farms follow growing and ripening periods, winter can shut down agricultural production, and trees gradually regrow after being cleared. There are puddles, muddy ground, footprints, cart tracks, and even working fishing huts with boats and fishermen who contribute food to your settlement. Wildlife gets some additional behavior, too, while the aftermath of battles can linger long enough to create some rather unpleasant sanitation problems.
Which, when you think about it, is exactly the kind of medieval realism most of us conveniently forget about while building our beautiful castles.
The recent update also addresses rendering problems involving black frames, seasonal textures, and crashes, although the creator hasn't finished validating every configuration. The project targets the Steam Edition of Stronghold 2, is intended for single-player, and requires Bloom to be enabled.
For those of us who still enjoy returning to the Stronghold series, having the world change around our settlements throughout the year sounds like a lovely addition. Just remember that winter doesn't particularly care whether you've finished building your granary.
