Twenty-two years after Unreal Tournament 2004, people are still finding new ways to make that old engine do things it was never particularly eager to do.

YoYoBatty's ShaderlessFX is a collection of more than sixty visual experiments built with UnrealScript and existing game materials. Mirrors, glass effects, shadowed flashlights, depth-of-field tricks, and even a view-distorting black hole are among the demonstrations. You can explore them inside the game, but the especially interesting part is that the creator has also included source code and a tutorial for other modders.

This isn't a replacement renderer or a promise to turn UT2004 into a modern graphics showcase. It's somebody getting wonderfully inventive with the tools already there. Some effects depend on Direct3D 8 or 9, and Direct3D 11 support isn't guaranteed. For anyone who enjoys seeing an old engine pushed around until it does something unexpected, there's plenty to poke at.
