Myst III: Exile was a showpiece in 2001, which is a funny thing to say about a game that ran at 640x480. Blow those pre-rendered worlds up on a modern monitor and the game's age shows fast: soft panoramas, blurry menus, and cutscenes that look like they're being broadcast from the bottom of a well.

That's particularly unfortunate for a game that's essentially about stopping and looking around. You land in an Age, turn a full 360 degrees, and try to work out what the place is telling you. And when looking closely is half the experience, those aging visuals become a pretty unfortunate problem to have.

Myst III: Exile HD, an unofficial fan pack that landed on ModDB on October 22, goes after exactly that. Running on a modified ScummVM engine, it sharpens nearly everything you look at: the panoramas, cinematics, small animations inside scenes, menus, and even the documents you read. Most of the work involves AI upscaling, but there's some thoughtful manual cleanup involved, too.

What caught our attention is the cleanup work layered on top. The project calls out fixes for book-cover lettering, puzzle-button edges, and overlapping animation masks. In a game where the answer to a puzzle might be sitting in the details of a book or a control panel, those are the spots where a blanket upscale can do real damage. It's reassuring to see someone went back and fixed them by hand.

The other smart decision is what the overhaul doesn't touch. The puzzles, story, and the way you move through the Ages are all unchanged. The project is clear that this is a visual enhancement pack, not a remake or a standalone game. In our opinion, that's the right restraint. Nobody is asking for a different Exile. We just want to see the one we remember without squinting.

A few caveats. This is an upscale of 2001-era art, so expect a cleaner Exile, not a rebuilt one. It's also an unofficial fan project, without official backing. We haven't run it ourselves, so the 4K screenshots and gameplay footage on ModDB are the best way to judge how well it holds up. There's a Windows installer to simplify setup, and the menus come in English, Russian, or a mix of both.
