Somebody turned DOOM into an isometric nightmare, and IsoDoom just got better

For more than three decades, we've been blasting our way through DOOM's corridors with demons staring us right in the face. But what happens when you pull the camera back, tilt the whole thing sideways, and watch the carnage unfold from above? That's the rather entertaining premise behind joepadmiraal's IsoDoom, an early-access remake built in Godot that gives the original games an entirely different perspective. Version 0.4.0 brings a proper automap, working cheats accessible through the menu, and improved visual cues that make the game's newfound sense of height and distance easier to understand.
Floors above and below the player now receive darker shading, unreachable enemies become less prominent, and enemies lurking beyond your immediate view can be indicated by a red beam. There are smaller presentation touches, too, including a pickup ripple that replaces the usual full-screen flash. You'll need your own DOOM or DOOM II game data, although the project describes a shareware option for players without a WAD ready to go. It's still an evolving remake, but seeing these familiar battlefields from such an unfamiliar angle is half the fun.
