Kenshi is one of those games that can swallow hundreds of hours before you even realize what's happened. Between building settlements, recruiting a ragtag group of survivors, getting beaten senseless by practically everything that moves, and occasionally finding yourself enslaved, there's really nothing quite like it.

But imagine being able to experience that same unforgiving world through an entirely new, open-source engine. That's what developer VlcekM is working toward with MeitouClient, an ambitious engine reimplementation that aims to run Kenshi's existing content, mods, and saves without replacing the game itself. You'll still need to own Kenshi, since the project doesn't distribute its assets. And while full compatibility remains a goal rather than a finished feature, the progress is getting interesting.

The October 18 release of version 0.14.0 brought further development to the world's underlying systems, including slavery mechanics, town shops, and town AI. Slavers can now enslave captives they're carrying, while squads responsible for keeping prisoners can begin with captives already held in their home cages. Those might sound like small details, but Kenshi's world depends on countless interacting systems like these to feel alive, dangerous, and wonderfully unpredictable.

A newer stable release, 0.14.1, followed on October 19, with experimental nightly builds continuing development. There's still plenty of work ahead, particularly around AI behavior and accurately reproducing the original experience. But rebuilding something as sprawling and unpredictable as Kenshi is no small undertaking. Watching another engine gradually learn how to make that world function is fascinating in its own right.
