There's something deeply unsettling about an enemy that understands your favorite game almost as well as you do. You've spent countless hours in Factorio building production lines, researching technology, and turning raw materials into increasingly elaborate machinery. Now imagine discovering that your enemies have been doing exactly the same thing, and they've decided your space platform would make a lovely addition to their operation.

That's the escalating threat behind Proliferation, codytnewman's mechanical enemy faction known as the Replicators. Unlike ordinary enemies, they mine resources, operate assemblers and laboratories, research their own technology, and expand with construction robots. Their military strength comes from actual production, meaning players can disrupt their supply chains and cripple their factories instead of simply fighting endless waves of enemies. They're playing Factorio, too. Unfortunately, you're on opposite teams.

The mod's October 25 update took that industrial rivalry into space with a mothership encounter that sounds like something out of a particularly cruel Factorio fever dream.

With the Space Age expansion installed, players can complete the necessary Replicator research to unlock a final technology opening the route to Deep Replicator Space, a dangerous destination beyond the faction's homeworld of Hala. Getting there means surviving a journey crowded with powerful enemy vessels, but reaching the destination doesn't mean you've found safety.

The mothership doesn't simply approach your space platform and open fire. It builds itself around your ship.

A massive U-shaped structure takes shape along the front and sides of your platform, connecting to your hub through three bridges. Each of the mothership's three hubs immediately dispatches 50 walkers, sending 150 hostile machines your way before you've even dealt with the factories producing their replacements.

And those replacements keep coming. The mothership manufactures reinforcements aboard its own hull, sending walkers and humanoid enemies across the bridges while launching smaller ships whenever your platform is stationary. Destroy one crossing and the attackers can find another route. Try to fly away and the mothership comes with you, still attached to your platform. The only permanent solution is to destroy it.

But the most dangerous part of the encounter might be what happens when you start winning.

Each of the mothership's three hubs contains a fully charged Zero-Point Module, or ZPM, that also supplies power to your platform while the structures remain connected. Damage a hub without destroying it outright, and its ZPM overloads. An unstable power module begins traveling toward your own hub on a conveyor belt that extends one tile every two seconds.

You've got three minutes.

When that timer expires, the ZPM detonates for 10,000 damage across a radius of roughly 50 tiles, threatening your ship along with anything else nearby. You can cut the conveyor belt, carry the unstable module somewhere safer, or even redirect it toward the mothership. Destroy a hub outright before the overload begins, however, and you can recover its intact ZPM.

It's a wonderfully mean piece of Factorio design. You've spent the entire game learning to move materials efficiently from one place to another, and now an enemy is using a conveyor belt to deliver an explosive directly to your doorstep. Suddenly, the solution to a deadly invasion might not be a bigger gun. It might be knowing exactly which belt to cut and when.

Bringing down all three hubs stops the mothership from manufacturing new enemies, although surviving units can continue fighting. Destroying the final hub also unlocks ZPM fabrication, allowing you to manufacture empty modules of your own. The enemy's greatest technological advantage becomes something you can eventually put to work.

There's a satisfying consistency to Proliferation's approach. The Replicators grow stronger by producing resources, developing technology, and expanding their factories, just as players do. Their mothership carries that philosophy into a battle where manufacturing, power distribution, and logistics are every bit as important as weapons.

Factorio has always been about building systems that work together. Proliferation gives you an opponent capable of doing the same thing, then makes you fight one of its factories while it's physically attached to yours.
