The USG Ishimura is a miserable place to be. You're trapped aboard a mining ship crawling with Necromorphs, the lighting is doing absolutely nothing for your nerves, and every suspicious noise makes you wonder whether something horrible is about to come crawling out of a ventilation shaft.

The last thing you need is the game itself hitching while you're trying to survive.

Unfortunately, traversal stuttering has been a frustration for some players of the 2023 Dead Space remake. Those little pauses when moving through the environment can be distracting in just about any game, but in survival horror, where atmosphere and tension are doing so much of the heavy lifting, they're especially unwelcome.

Modder lukeman3000 is tackling the problem with Ishimura Patch, a new experimental fix that changes how the game handles GPU memory requests in an effort to reduce traversal stutter. The creator has published comparison recordings suggesting improvements on their test system, although those results shouldn't be mistaken for independent benchmarks or a guarantee that everyone will see the same benefit.

There's reason to be cautious before declaring the problem solved. The patch is still in beta, and the developer has tested it on only a handful of Windows PCs. Bugs and inconsistent results remain possibilities.

Still, we'd love to see this one succeed. Dead Space's remake does a fantastic job of making the Ishimura feel like a ship you desperately want to escape. The horror should come from what's lurking around the next corner, not whether the game will stumble when you get there.
