For some people, surviving Dark Souls III once is more than enough punishment for six lifetimes. For others, apparently, it's an invitation to build an entirely different Souls adventure inside it.

The Archthrones Team's Dark Souls Archthrones reimagines the game around five worlds connected through a hub inspired by Demon's Souls, introducing redesigned locations, original characters, new equipment, and a formidable collection of boss fights.

The playable demo alone features 17 bosses, with additional combat mechanics such as deflection, guard counters, and perfect blocking giving familiar encounters a different rhythm. Because naturally, what Dark Souls needed was another opportunity to question your reflexes... and possibly your life choices.

As exciting as this all sounds, there's something worth knowing before you dive in. At the time of this Spotlight's publication, Archthrones was still a demo, not a finished total conversion, and the team hadn't announced a date for the complete release.

You'll also need the Steam version of Dark Souls III and both DLC expansions. More importantly, the team warns against using Archthrones save data in the regular game's online environment because of potential bans. Co-op is available through a separate private-server arrangement, so there's still an opportunity to share the suffering with a friend.

And really, that's part of what makes Archthrones so intriguing. Dark Souls III was already perfectly capable of ruining your afternoon, and here's an entire team building new worlds, characters, and bosses for those of us who apparently haven't been traumatized enough.

Some people just can't leave well enough alone - and thank goodness for that.
